Students of Our Partner Schools

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Richmond Public Schools serves 24, 226 children from the 60 sq. miles that make up the Commonwealth’s capital city. Although a majority of the children are African American (88.29%), there are small and growing Asian, Indian and Hispanic populations. In fact, the Hispanic population increased 24.6% between 2004 and 2007.

In her recent State of the Schools address, Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Yvonne W. Brandon, who was elected to the position in January, said that she is working towards getting all of Richmond’s 35,000 school age children enrolled in the schools by 2012. Check out her other remarks in the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s article. These kids are fortunate to have someone like Dr. Brandon leading their education.

Our kids are succeeding in their academic endeavors, but there is always room for improvement.

Our smart teenagers at George Wythe High School did very well on their SOL’s. For the 2008-2009 school year, 92% passed the English SOL and 85% passed math.

In 2008-2009 at Elkhardt Middle School, 84% of the students passed their English SOL’s, while 73% passed the math SOL.

In the same  time frame at Broad Rock Elementary, an outstanding 96% of the students passed their English SOL’s, and a whopping 92% passed the math SOL.

Keep checking back for more about the successes of Richmond kids.
